Why Is My Eye Twitching?

Why Is My Eye Twitching?

That annoying little flutter in your eyelid — the medical name is eyelid myokymia — is one of the most common reasons patients Google “eye specialist in Noida” at 2 AM. The reassuring news: 99% of the time, it is completely harmless and self-limiting.

The usual triggers

  • Stress — number one cause
  • Lack of sleep
  • Caffeine excess — coffee, energy drinks, cola
  • Screen strain and dry eye
  • Magnesium deficiency
  • Alcohol

What you can do at home

  • Sleep 7–8 hours for a few nights
  • Cut caffeine by 50% and see if it helps in a week
  • Use a warm compress on the eyelid twice a day
  • Lubricating eye drops for dry eye — 4 times a day
  • Reduce screen time in the evening

When to see an eye doctor urgently

Eye twitching is a “red flag” when it is accompanied by any of the following:

  • The twitching spreads to the cheek or half your face (this could be hemifacial spasm — a neurological condition)
  • Your eye closes involuntarily and you can't open it (blepharospasm)
  • The eyelid drops or a pupil looks different in size
  • You develop double vision
  • The twitching has continued for more than 3 weeks daily

Treatment options if it doesn't settle

For chronic blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm, precision Botox injections into the affected muscles are extremely effective. Dr. Gurkiran Kaur is fellowship-trained in oculoplasty and administers therapeutic Botox for these conditions.
