Can Pregnancy Affect My Eyes?

Can Pregnancy Affect My Eyes?

Pregnancy changes almost every organ system in the body — and the eyes are no exception. Most changes are minor and reverse after delivery, but there are a few that are genuine emergencies. Here's what every expectant mother should know.

The common, harmless changes

  • Fluctuating spectacle number — hormone-driven corneal changes make your prescription slightly unstable. Don't buy a new pair of glasses during pregnancy; retest 6–8 weeks after delivery
  • Dry eye — worsens due to hormonal changes; use preservative-free lubricants freely
  • Puffy eyelids — usual fluid retention
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses — corneal thickness changes; switch to glasses temporarily

The three that need urgent evaluation

1. Pre-eclampsia related vision changes

Blurred vision, spots in vision, light sensitivity, or seeing double — especially with headache and swelling — can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. This is an obstetric emergency; call your obstetrician immediately.

2. Diabetic retinopathy progression

Existing diabetes can worsen rapidly during pregnancy. Every diabetic pregnant patient needs a dilated retina check every trimester.

3. Central serous retinopathy

A small proportion of pregnant women develop this — sudden central blurring or a dim spot in the vision. Usually self-limiting but needs formal evaluation.

What about LASIK during pregnancy?

Not recommended. LASIK requires a stable spectacle number, and pregnancy destabilises it. Wait until 3–6 months after delivery and after weaning to be evaluated.
