What's the Difference Between an Optometrist and an Ophthalmologist?

This question comes up more often than you would expect — and getting the answer wrong costs patients time, money, and sometimes vision. In India these two are very different qualifications and they do very different things.

Ophthalmologist

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor — MBBS + MS/DNB Ophthalmology, often with further fellowship training. They:

• Diagnose and treat all eye diseases medically and surgically
• Perform cataract, retina, glaucoma, oculoplasty and refractive surgeries
• Prescribe medications
• Prescribe glasses and contact lenses
• Manage eye emergencies

Optometrist

An optometrist is not a medical doctor — they have a 3–4 year Bachelor of Optometry degree. They:

• Test your vision and prescribe glasses
• Fit contact lenses
• Screen for common eye conditions and refer to an ophthalmologist when needed
• Do NOT perform surgery or prescribe medications for eye disease (in India)

See an optometrist for:

• A basic annual eye check-up if you have no symptoms and no risk factors
• A new pair of glasses when your vision has changed
• Contact lens fitting

See an ophthalmologist for:

• Any eye pain, redness or discharge
• Sudden vision changes, floaters or flashes
• Any eye injury
• Cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease or diabetes eye check
• Suspected squint or lazy eye in children
• Any surgery consideration — including LASIK
• A comprehensive eye evaluation after age 40
