Cataract
How Long Does Cataract Surgery Take?
Dr. Gurkiran Kaur 3 August 2026
Modern cataract surgery is remarkably quick — the actual procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye. But your day at the clinic will be longer than that, because good surgery is 20% cutting and 80% preparation and observation.
Your cataract surgery day at Nehchal Eye Centre — timeline
- Arrival — please come 1 hour before scheduled time
- Pre-op check — vitals, biometry re-confirmation, IOL power double-check (15–20 min)
- Dilation and anaesthetic drops — 20–30 min for pupil to fully dilate
- Actual surgery — 10–15 min per eye
- Post-op observation — 30 min in the recovery area
- Discharge — with medications, protective shield, and follow-up card
So the honest total?
Plan for 2.5 to 3 hours at the clinic on the day of surgery. You will not be in the operating room for more than 20 minutes total.
What determines how long the actual surgery takes?
- Hardness of the cataract — advanced, hyper-mature cataracts need more time
- Pupil size — small pupils may need mechanical dilation
- Prior eye surgery or trauma
- Whether both eyes are done same day — usually we do one eye at a time, one week apart
Same-day discharge
