Are Contact Lenses Safe for Daily Use?
Contact lenses are safe for daily use — if they fit correctly, if your hygiene is honest, and if you never sleep in them. Every eye specialist has seen contact lens complications that could have been avoided by following a handful of simple rules. Here they are.
The non-negotiable rules
- Never sleep in your contact lenses — even the “approved for overnight wear” ones significantly raise the risk of infection
- Never use tap water to rinse lenses or lens cases — Acanthamoeba, a serious corneal infection, hides in tap water
- Never top up old solution — always throw out and use fresh
- Replace lenses on schedule — daily disposables daily, monthlies monthly, no cheating
- Wash hands before handling
- Replace the case every 3 months
Signs you need to see us urgently
- Redness, pain, or blurred vision after removing lenses
- Light sensitivity that lasts more than a few hours
- Excessive watering with a foreign body feeling
- Discharge or crusting
Are daily disposables safer than monthlies?
Yes — statistically the safest lens format. No cleaning, no storage, no case-related contamination. If cost allows, daily disposables are our default recommendation.
Can I swim or shower in contact lenses?
No. Water (pool, sea, shower) is a well-documented source of Acanthamoeba. Wear prescription goggles or take the lenses out first.
When to switch to specs or LASIK
If you get more than 2 contact-lens-related eye issues in a year, we recommend rethinking the strategy — either better lens fit, more disposable format, or exploring LASIK / SMILE / ICL.
