When Should Children Have an Eye Check-up?

Here is the single most important thing every parent needs to know: children rarely complain about their vision. They don't know what normal looks like, so they don't report it. That is why pediatric eye screening is not optional — it is preventive medicine.

The recommended schedule

At birth

The paediatrician does a red-reflex test. This detects congenital cataract and retinoblastoma — rare but sight-threatening conditions.

6 months

Assessment of visual milestones — is the baby following faces and objects, tracking a moving toy, reaching accurately?

1–2 years

Any concern raised at home or by the paediatrician warrants a formal eye check.

3 years — first comprehensive exam

Full evaluation including refraction (with cycloplegic drops), squint check, and posterior segment. This is when amblyopia (lazy eye) is most treatable.

Before starting school

Full exam including detailed refraction, amblyopia screening, and colour vision testing.

Every 1–2 years thereafter

Especially if wearing glasses, if there is family history of high refractive error, or if academic performance drops.

Warning signs to bring the child in immediately

  • Eyes not straight — one turns in or out
  • Head tilt to see clearly
  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Complaining of headaches after school
  • White reflex in a photograph (instead of red-eye)

Why the 3-year exam is non-negotiable

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is fully reversible before age 8 — after which the visual pathway hardens and the vision is largely fixed for life. A 20-minute paediatric eye exam at age 3 can literally save your child's vision.
