What Is LASIK and Am I a Candidate?

LASIK is the most well-known way to say goodbye to glasses or contact lenses. It reshapes the cornea with a laser so light focuses correctly on the retina. The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes for both eyes and vision is usually clear the next day. But — and this is the honest bit — not everyone is a good LASIK candidate.

The ideal LASIK candidate

• Age 18 or older (ideally 21+)
• Stable spectacle number for at least 12 months
• Refractive error within a treatable range (usually up to -10D myopia, +5D hyperopia, 5D astigmatism)
• Healthy corneal thickness on pachymetry
• Normal corneal shape on topography (no keratoconus)
• No active eye disease and controlled dry eye
• Reasonable expectations

Who is NOT a LASIK candidate?

• Anyone with keratoconus or forme-fruste keratoconus (early keratoconus)
• Very thin corneas
• Severe uncontrolled dry eye
• Autoimmune disease affecting healing
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women (temporary — retest after)
• Unstable spectacle number

The evaluation matters more than the surgery

A proper LASIK evaluation includes corneal topography, pachymetry, wavefront analysis, dry eye workup and a manifest refraction. It takes about 90 minutes. This is where we decide LASIK, SMILE, PRK, ICL — or an honest “you're better off with glasses right now”.

Alternatives if LASIK isn't right for you
