How diabetes damages the eye

1. Diabetic retinopathy

The tiny blood vessels of the retina are the most sensitive tissue in the body to high blood sugar. Over years, they leak, bleed and grow abnormal new vessels — all silently, until the macula is affected or a vitreous haemorrhage occurs.

2. Diabetic macular edema

Fluid accumulates in the central retina. This is the most common cause of vision loss in diabetics. Treatment includes anti-VEGF injections and laser.

3. Cataract at a younger age

Diabetics develop cataracts up to 10 years earlier than non-diabetics.

4. Glaucoma risk doubles

Especially neovascular glaucoma in advanced diabetic retinopathy.

5. Fluctuating refractive error
